Drama At The Olympics

We love the Olympics, but we also love the middle-school drama that comes from having people from all over the world in one place. We pick a side to support and we select a random country to hate and the games begin. The Winter Games of 2018 are no exception and have not been disappointing in the Drama Department.

Marriage = Bad Athlete

I’m guessing you didn’t know that once you get married your sporting career goes downhill.  At least, according to commentator Bode Miller, who is also a skier who surmised that Austiran skier Anna Veith’s declining performance was due to her recent marriage. “I want to point out that she also got married. And it’s historically very challenging to race on the World Cup with a family or after being married. Not to blame the spouses, but I just want to toss it out there that it may be her husband’s fault.”

People took to Twitter calling him out saying that he was mansplaining her performance and implying that Anna may not ski well because of her marriage responsibilities. Bode responded with a tweet “To be clear I was not seriously blaming Anna Veith’s lack of results on her husband. It’s a changing of priorities that is historically hard, male or female.”  He’s totally right. Her poor performance probably had nothing to do with the fact that she tore her ACL a few years and everything to do with the fact that she’s someone’s wife now.

Pence Drama

Mike Pence, our lovely VP has been all over the place in the Drama Department. He’s single handedly managed to turn the Winter Olympics into his personal Middle School Playground. First we have the whole Mike Pence vs. Adam Rippon situation that started back in January when Rippon- the first openly gay athlete to compete for the US in the Winter Olympics- was asked if he would be up for meeting the vice president. Who, if you weren’t already aware, is very anti-gay in his words, actions and policies.  Rippon stated that he would not want to meet with Pence because of his policies and reportedly, Pence was upset by this and reached out to Rippon. Allegedly, that was also declined, and adding to the rumors, Pence tweeted at Rippon about ‘fake news’ and offered support.

Donald Jr In On The Drama

DTJr even got involved in this when Rippon tweeted “I don’t want my Olympic experience being about Mike Pence.” To which Donald Trump Jr followed his father’s example and channeled his inner Middle School Girl and tweeted “Really? Then perhaps you shouldn’t have spent the past few weeks talking about him. I haven’t heard him mention you once???” Petty much?

The icing on the Pence Cake came when Kim Jong-un’s sister, Kim Yo-jong was seated near him during the Opening Ceremony. Pence wanted the entire world to know that he wasn’t avoiding her, he was ignoring her intentionally. At an Axios event he stated, “I didn’t avoid the dictator’s sister, but I did ignore her. I didn’t believe it was proper for the USA to give her any attention in that forum.”

What. The. What? Apparently being polite and cordial AT A SPORTING EVENT INVOLVING EVERY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD isn’t proper. Way to have good sportsmanship there, Pence.
