Let’s get one thing clear from the beginning: I love Oprah. I remember as a little girl watching her compete for ratings against Phil Donahue. Experiencing her show and watching it change and evolve from flash TV to this gigantic empire. All powered by Her Majesty, Ms. Winfrey. Her show became a show of empowerment, of learning your own self-worth. Her life is a step by step guide to harnessing the goodness in the Universe and bringing that home to your soul. From Gratitude Journals to silly recipes and work outs, Oprah has done it all. Except run for president.
What started as a tongue in cheek remark at the latest Hollywood party has begun to gain momentum. Oprah Winfrey for president in 2020? Could it be a possibility? What would this mean for America, other than the obvious First Woman President? Honestly, I’m not 100% sure how I feel about the whole idea, and I figured it was worth exploring. Is it possible that this little girl from Kosciusko, Mississippi, born on a cold January morning in 1954 could be our next president?
FREE STUFF FOR EVERYONE!!
If nothing else, Oprah Winfrey is a philanthropist. The woman has a huge bank account and a heart to match. From starting the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa to giving 300 audience members $1000 each to donate to their favorite charity, no one spreads the wealth like Oprah. A quick Google search reveals that she regularly donates her time and money to multiple charities, both in the US and overseas. From orphaned children to abandoned pets, it would seem that there is not a cause out there that she doesn’t contribute to. Who knows? Maybe by the year 2021, we’ll all wake up to find a brand new car sitting in our driveways from President Winfrey!
Agree to Disagree
Oprah has never been one to shy away from controversy. She’s definitely a diplomat, always willing to explore both sides of the story. I’ve watched her show many times and am always amazed at her level headed approach to topics (and with people) that she openly disagrees with. It would appear that she has a deep need to comprehend exactly who someone is, where they are from and what makes them tick. I think she would have been a great therapist or an excellent profiler for the FBI. I’m trying to imagine her in North Korea with Kim Jong-Un at a Peace Talk. It’s not that difficult to imagine. I could see her doing it. But, should she?
Is Oprah Qualified to be President?
Like I said earlier, I love Oprah. I think she’s brilliant and powerful and kind and compassionate… but I really can’t say how I would feel about her as POTUS. The biggest argument I’ve heard is that she has no political background, no experience. True, but she ran a multimedia production company, Harpo Inc, for years. She has her own magazine, O Magazine. For crying out loud, she runs her very own personalized television network, OWN. Ms. Winfrey’s life has been full of firsts and she’s never been one to say that something couldn’t be done. So, maybe she will run, maybe she’ll be the first woman President. Who can say? What started as a joke has gotten me thinking; it’s no longer a far-fetched idea for a television star with no political experience to hold the highest seat in our government. Maybe she’ll paint the White House purple!
